CRISTIANO RONALDO
Cristiano Ronaldo is forward player who currently plays for Real Madrid and Portugal. He is generally renowned as one of the greatest players in footballing history.Ronaldo made his break through at Sporting Lisbon, aged just 16. During the 2002-2003 season, Ronaldo attracted a lot of attention, with Liverpool, Barcelona and Arsenal all being linked with him. However, it was a friendly in August 2003 against Manchester United that led to Ronaldo’s first transfer. His performance was so good that the Manchester United players urged Alex Ferguson to sign him. He ended up signing for Manchester United in the same month for a fee of £12.24 million, making him the most expensive teenager in English football history at the time. Ronaldo made his Manchester United debut on 16thAugust 2003, coming on as a 60thminute substitute. His performance earned high praise with George Best describing it as the most exciting debut he had ever seen.
Ronaldo finished his first season by scoring the opening goal in a 3-0 win against Millwall to win the F.A Cup. Ronaldo had a good second season, this time being on the losing side in the F.A Cup final as United lost to Arsenal on penalties. The 2005-2006 season was a difficult one for Ronaldo as he clashed with teammates, opposition players and even opposition fans. This culminated in an altercation with Wayne Rooney at the 2006 World Cup, leading to Ronaldo publicly requesting a transfer. The club rejected this and in 2006-2007, despite constant booing by away fans, Ronaldo had a breakthrough season, scoring over 20 goals and winning his first Premier League title. He finished the season by winning a host of individual awards for his performances. He followed this up by having his best season in England during the 2007-08 season, scoring 42 goals. He won the Premier League title and the UEFA Champions League and once again won a host of individual awards, with Real Madrid beginning to show an interest. Later that year, he would win his first World Player of the Year award.
Following another Premier League title in 2008-09, Ronaldo finally got his dream move to Real Madrid, for what at the time was a world record £80 million. He finished his first season with 33 goals but Real Madrid won no trophies. He ended his second season with 53 goals in all competition, becoming the first player to score 40 league goals in Spain. He went on to better this in 2011-12 by scoring 60 goals in all competitions and won his first Spanish league title. Ronaldo ended 2013 with 69 goals in 59 appearances, winning his second World Player of the Year award as a result. The 2013-14 season also saw Ronaldo help Real Madrid win their 10thUEFA Champions League and his first at the club. The 2014-15 season saw Ronaldo score a record 61 goals and win the World Player of the Year award for a second year in a row. At the start of the 2015-16 season, Ronaldo became the club’s all time top-scorer, ending the season with more than 50 goals and another UEFA Champions League winners medal. Ronaldo followed this up by then captaining Portugal in the summer of 2016 as they went on to win the UEFA European Championship.
